Martin Road Winery Light & Shadow Studies

Light and Shadow Charette provided the students with the opportunity to develop, in a focused way, aspects of their projects of the winery, with the careful manipulation of light and shadow. This charette was used to define clear spatial hierarchy, could help to direct people through the building, and could evoke a strong experiential response. Careful orchestration of light and shadow can evoke certain emotional states, including calm and awe, contemplation - this is why light and shadow are so carefully controlled in places of worship. However, buildings need not be specifically programmed for such activity to take advantage of these elements to create memorable and meaningful architectural experiences.
