Avery Jordan—Ledcor Architecture Scholarship in Honour of Stewart Crawford

About the Award
Ledcor Architecture Scholarship in Honour of Stewart Crawford:
For overall academic excellence and excellence in technical courses in first year.
In my first year of study in the Bachelor of Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University, I worked on projects that introduced me to the key aspects of an architectural project such as site analysis, program, and conceptual thinking. Throughout the year, this knowledge and practiced skills were transformed into a strong foundation that will support my architectural aspirations for the future.
The curriculum of our first year design studio was geared toward effective communication of ideas, concepts and technical drawings. We were further encouraged to explore the principles of design such as spatial relationships, proportion and scale, materiality, as well as form and function. One project in particular that expressed the accumulation of my learning in first year and its integration into a design project was the Bird Observatory Studio Project. The objective was to design a Bird Observation and Learning Centre for the High Park Community, a site which is known to be the home for many birds and other wildlife in the heart of the city. In order to respond to the site I aspired to create a space that considered the natural environment and the needs of the future buildings’ occupants. In order to achieve this, I considered how the natural elements of the site, the trees and views, could be framed to create an optimal observation and learning experience. Throughout this project, I was able to refine my skills in technical drawing and explore rendering for the first time.
A lot of my learning was experiential and needed to be refined and reconsidered throughout the design process. Thankfully, I have found tremendous support from both professors and other students in the architectural community. I believe that a lot of my success in first year can be attributed to the collaborative nature of my colleagues and friends. I have found that collaborative dialogue has become a fundamental part of my creative process. Constructive criticism and unique perspectives have proven to have a great influence over my final designs. When I am faced with a challenge or uncertainty in my design process, I am able to seek the advice of my peers and gain alternative perspectives which have helped to increase the clarity of my designs as well as my overall confidence in my work.
It is a great honour to receive this award and to have my work recognized by the Department of Architectural Science. I would like to express my gratitude to my professors for their guidance and support as I navigated my way through an entirely foreign field of study in my first year of study. Their commitment to providing me with foundational knowledge and invaluable feedback throughout my first semesters have allowed me to further develop my creativity and passion for architecture.
