BA, BID, BCIN, ARIDO, IDC, NCIDQ
Principal Designer, Denizens of Design
Dyonne Fashina is Founder and Principal Designer at Denizens of Design; an Interior Design Studio specializing in public and commercial spaces centered around building community – including spaces for dining, gathering, working, relaxing, learning, and creating. The aspect of community in her work begins with the design process itself. Her practice is built entirely on partnerships, working with independent practitioners, small and large firms on projects of all scales.
Her passion for design is rooted in her love for the arts, fashion, culture and architecture. Formally trained in both fine arts and interior design, she has achieved international recognition through a diverse range of projects.
Notable work includes adaptable gathering spaces in landmark cultural institutions, such as the Gardiner Museum and McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Recently, Dyonne completed a renovation to the event space inside the Arthur Erickson addition at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery. Dyonne’s starting point is always the identity and history of each space, foregrounding cultural sensitivity and partnering with local makers. Deep research and empathy in her design strategy bring quantifiable business value to every project. Dyonne thrives on finding meaningful connections to inspire everyone involved throughout the design process. She designs with compassion for the human experience, creating spaces that are not only thoughtful, but thought-provoking.

Project Spotlight
MCMICHAEL CANADIAN ART COLLECTION - CABIN RESTAURANT AND EVENT SPACE
Cabin Restaurant, situated at the hearth of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, serves as a focal point for the community, dedicated entirely to celebrating Canadian art. The building’s architecture pays homage to Canada’s essence with a modernist interpretation of a log cabin, constructed from recycled logs and fieldstone, overlooking the historic Humber River. Inspired by iconic Canadian artworks such as the Group of Seven and the landscapes of the Canadian Shield, Cabin Restaurant reflects the McMichaels’ profound commitment to Canadian art in a space that once served as their home.
Every aspect of the restaurant design respects and integrates with the gallery’s history, artwork, and natural surroundings, fostering a sense of unity. This communal space encourages gathering and sharing, reminiscent of historical artists’ cafés where creativity flourished. By transforming an unused gallery space into a versatile dining area, the restaurant not only offers a premier lunch experience but also serves as a focal point for community gatherings. Each piece of furniture, from movable privacy screens to modular service stands, was carefully crafted with functionality in mind, while supporting a high traffic environment and maintaining ambiance. Emphasizing Canadian craftsmanship, all furnishings were locally sourced, continuing the tradition of recognizing the work of Canadians.
In essence, Cabin Restaurant celebrates Canada’s cultural diversity and communal spirit, inviting everyone to engage in its legacy of creativity and shared heritage.
