The Mies Memorial Library: THE I.I.T. COLLECTION

The Mies Memorial Library is a unique building on the IIT campus, but the team was set on creating a building that did not overshadow Mie’s own work, but celebrated it. It was a goal to allow the building to seamlessly become a part of the campus fabric rather than stand out. With this at the forefront of thought, the guiding grid-system of the Memorial Library was informed and inspired by the grid-systems of the surrounding context. The Crown Hall and Paul Galvin Library’s measurements were reflected in the new library to pay homage and respect to Mies. Furthermore, the idea of framing a view from inside the library was a key design concept which informed the placement of the glazing and interior programming. Mies was always one who sought to utilize the latest technologies of his time, so our team imagined how Mies would design in today’s technological climate. The use of CLT mass timber construction is one of the latest phenomena of the recent 21st century and thus was chosen as the main structural component.
