Jose-Miguel Calle—JFA Diversity and Inclusion in Architecture Award

Architecture education is a dynamic balance of creativity, construction, and community. Through my “Day in the Life of an Architecture Student” vlog, I share a glimpse into this journey, highlighting the daily rhythm of design exploration and the use of digital fabrication tools to bring ideas to life. The project reflects not only my personal experience as a student but also the energy and curiosity that drive my work each day.
One of the most formative experiences in my education has been my involvement in the production and on-site construction of SOLAIR, an installation for Winter Stations 2025. Working through the full process—from conceptual design to fabrication and assembly—taught me the complexity and reward of translating ideas into built form. The experience provided valuable insight into how design thinking, teamwork, and technical execution merge to shape architecture that is both thoughtful and tangible.
Further extending this engagement beyond the classroom, I took a leadership role in the design fabrication of Park(ing) Day 2025. This initiative transformed a temporary public space into a platform for creative expression and community interaction. Guiding this event allowed me to foster collaboration among students while showcasing how architectural thinking can activate and enrich the urban environment.
My academic path has also been enriched by the opportunity to present and share research on international stages, representing the TMU DAS among educators and professionals from around the world. In these experiences, I presented research on how immersive environments and experiential learning affect the way we learn and communicate in architecture. Presenting this work at international conferences gave me the chance to share ideas about how education and practice can grow together. Representing DAS on a global stage has been a meaningful way to connect my learning to broader discussions in the field.
As Events Executive of the Architecture Course Union, I continue to create meaningful opportunities for students to connect, collaborate, and celebrate their collective work. Through organizing events and initiatives that bring together students across all years, I aim to strengthen our shared studio culture and foster a vibrant, supportive community for everyone at DAS.
Thank you once again for your generosity and for supporting the next generation of architects.
