Marko Jovanovic—The Irena K. Orlowski Award

About the Award
The Irena K. Orlowski Award:
Provides support to a student in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year, and is based on academic achievement and a contribution and involvement in university life and bettering the world around them.
My Involvement.
During my time as a student at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Architectural Science program, I have consistently sought opportunities to enhance my teamwork, communication, design, visualization, and construction skills. I prioritized active involvement in university life while also attending architecture events outside of school.
Over the past two years, I participated in several design-build projects, including three installations for the Yonge Street Business Improvement Area, work for the Toronto Botanical Gardens, and a pop-up installation for the renowned Park(ing) Day event.
I have been given the exciting opportunity to work with a group of peers to create several papers for this year’s 17th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI), as a student research assistant for Professor Vincent Hui. Currently, I have co-authored three research papers: “Why Be Conceptual,” “Das Connection,” and “Learning from Leaving,” and I have presented the “Why Be Conceptual” paper at the conference, in Seville Spain.
Additionally, I actively sought architecture and design events throughout Toronto to network and refine my communication skills with industry professionals. During the annual Doors Open Toronto events, I had the opportunity to engage with professionals from firms such as SvN Architects, Dubbeldam Studio, Taylor Hazell Architects, Three Architecture Practices, and Hariri Pontarini Architects.
To further immerse myself in the architecture community, I obtained student memberships with the Ontario Association (OAA) of Architects and the Toronto Society of Architects (TSA). I look forward to participating in many more design-build events at school and aim to continue expanding my network within the field.
