Mei Li—GKC Architecture Leadership Award

Throughout my life, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have excellent mentors who’ve guided and supported my growth. Most of all, my older sister has been a constant source of encouragement, pushing me to grow both personally and professionally. She’s the first person I turn to for advice and clarity, and I feel more confident taking on new challenges knowing someone is in my corner.
These experiences shaped my understanding of leadership: it is not only about guiding others, but about creating tangible opportunities for growth and support, especially for those who may not know where to find it. Recognizing that mentorship may not always feel accessible, I have dedicated myself to leadership roles within TMU’s architecture community, serving as a resource, advocate, and connector for my peers.
As President of the Architecture Course Union (2023–2024), I focused on building inclusive and supportive spaces for students. I helped organize the First-Year Orientation, planning activities that fostered connections with peers and faculty to make incoming students feel welcomed and equipped to navigate early challenges. I also played a role in organizing the Peer Mentorship Program, pairing lower-year students with upper-year mentors for guidance on academics and development. I have personally mentored two students each year, offering consistent support as they navigate their studies.
I also led the organization of a Women in Architecture Symposium, providing students with opportunities to engage with and learn from industry professionals. My leadership extended to my role in the Buone Nuove/Good News from Italy: Women in Architecture Exhibition. In addition to my contribution of the design of exhibition and promotional materials, I also acted as a primary liaison with prominent architects, faculty, cultural institutions, and printers. To amplify emerging voices, our team created the Postcards to Progress open call, inviting the greater architecture community to showcase their work and contributions to the field. Generating over 100 submissions, the initiative underscored the exhibition’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, creating a platform for all voices in architecture to be supported and celebrated.
Currently, I am one of two Co-op Peer Advisors. I support 20 third-year students navigating their first portfolio, resume, and cover letter processes. Through group and one-on-one mentorship, I provide both technical guidance and personal support, helping students articulate their experiences, build confidence, and set meaningful professional goals.
To me, leadership is about extending the hand I was fortunate to receive. Through my roles, I strive to foster a culture of care and mutual support, helping one another navigate challenges with confidence and assurance. I hope that the guidance and platforms I create continue to nurture a close-knit and vibrant architecture community within and beyond our school.
