SECOND YEAR UNDERGRADUATE
Nicholas Kisil—Industry Supported Architecture Scholarship in Honour of Stewart Crawford

About the Award

Industry Supported Architecture Scholarship in Honour of Stewart Crawford:
For best overall academic performance in first year.

The first year of my undergraduate studies began to teach me how to take an idea and translate it into architectural language. Lots of the knowledge I gained came from the opportunities that the program offers outside of the normal classes, including the DAS lectures. Being able to learn from industry professionals and ask them questions changed the way I was approaching my studio projects and thought about the industry as a whole.

I was able to be a part of the 2023-2024 winter stations team and this taught me a lot about designing at the 1:1 scale.  Working on projects at this scale has allowed me to think about ideas at a conceptual level all the way down to how the small details will be constructed. Being a part of this team connected me with upper students who were able to guide me and share their experiences in the program. Additionally, these opportunities have taught me how to work on a project in a group and what it takes to realize an idea while thinking about the tectonics, cost, and scheduling.

Hide and Seek.

During the 2023-2024 winter semester of Studio I, students were tasked with designing a bird observatory and learning center located in High Park. With this site already rich in birdwatching activity, Hide and Seek is intended to serve as both a gathering space for birdwatching enthusiasts and an educational hub for the broader community. This project offers an escape where framed views guide the eye, striping away distractions, and allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the captivating world of birds. The views take you on a journey with an end destination being a balcony in the tree canopies.
