UNDERGRADUATE
Olivia Nunn—Toronto Society of Architects Award
About the Award

For a student in their final year who has completed an outstanding project situated in the Toronto/Greater Toronto area.

The mixed use mid-rise located in the Bloor West Village respects the surrounding context through an understanding of the rhythm, character and material articulation of the store fronts along Bloor. The design aims to be a ‘good neighbor’ internally and externally. The organization of spaces, including the townhouses at the rear of the site, ensures that the surrounding residential neighbourhood has a subtle transition to the 5 storey building. The use of exterior green spaces for gathering promotes neighbourly interactions for users, and this translates into the interior with the atrium space which creates a secondary facade for access to light, and furthers interactions with residents in an area that reinforces a healthy environment through biophilic design strategies. Ultimately, this design sets a precedent for the community as it is a reminder that new designs can pay homage to the existing architectural character of the site, and not impede on the heritage value of a thriving community.
