UNDERGRADUATE
Sabrina Wassay—General Contractors Association of Toronto Award

About the Award

For overall excellence and a demonstrated interest in project management is presented to fourth year students.

I have always had an interest in the field of project management since high school and I am glad I am able to be in a program that allows me to explore both project management in construction and architecture. In this program, have classes such as The Construction Project and Project Economics have helped me to explore what it means to be a project managr, the different jobs they perform, and their role in the AEC industry.

Being in project management has helped me learn that is it not only about being in charge of a project, but also what it means to be a leader and connect with others, learn about economic sustainability taking into account HVAC Systems, materiality, and labour. People and teams are what make up project management and is what has helped me further want to explore this field in the near future.

My library project (shown below) is my second year project that has helped me explore what it means to be a project manager, taking into account how to use glazing responsibly, how to create an economically efficient structure that enhanses the structure of the building in its design. An exaple of this would be creating informal meeting spaces, as shown in the section and roof render. The materials used on the facade and the structure are aso taken into consideration for keeping energy costs and maintainance costs low and efficiency high.

During the summer, I was priviledged enough to work in a Civil Engineer Firm where I was able to see people going to site and Project Managers in action. Project Managers do not have an easy job, and coming from a background on project management and architecture has allowed me to fully understand what is happening on a site visit and behind the scenes, which makes me even more excited to see that what I learned in class is practiced in the real world. This position also allowed me to see things from a civil engineer’s point of view and see how to design efficient, stable structures that are sustainable and efficient. I was able to see materials being tested (and tet them myself ) to make sure materials such as concrete and aggreggate were up to code and the steps it took to get there. Building a structure takes a lot of hard work from many different teams that coordinate with each other and makes someone more grateful for the process and hard work everyone puts in to creating a project. However, I was unable to get a deeper look into how a project handled and is something I want to explore with my upcoming Co-op term.

Going forward, I want to go into the Project Managemet stream for Architectural science in my fourth yeat and start by having my toes dipped into the surface of project management by having a Co-op placement with a project manager to better grasp the position and what it entails for me. This is something that I have been passionate for many years now and I am finally able to see my hard work pay off through this award. I have been working really hard all summer every year to help cover my student costs and this award will help me greatly to continue learning without the stress of calculating my own maintainence costs on top of my building’s.

This award was an amaing susrprise that I will be greatful for and pushes me to work harder to achieve my dreams in the AEC, which is very a very diverse field that allows me to explore the many different occupations through my program in Architectural Science.
