About the Award
To recognize students who demonstrate emerging talent in conveying design through 3D architectural visualization. Norm Li wants to build and maintain mutually rewarding relationships so that they can achieve exceptional results for their team and their clients. Through this award they hope to achieve the following objectives:
The Toronto Oakwood-Vaughan neighborhood used to be a Jamaican immigrant population area. The neighborhood has been greatly impacted by the Eglinton street construction, which has led to the resulting gentrification of the street, causing the neighbourhood to gradually lose its identity and the sense of cultural belonging. In order to solve this current issue, this design introduces an informal gathering space, and more dedicated cultural space for the neighborhood.
The massing of the architecture is divided by walkways that lead pedestrians from outside into the building's inner atrium. The neighborhood needs an informal gathering space and a dedicated cultural space in order to bring back the sense of identity and cultural belonging. Between building volumes, the walls are bended and peeled from the initial massing to form a kind of crevice space. Whether the walls are horizontal or vertical, the motion of “peeling” guides pedestrians from the outside to explore inwards, while at the same time introducing light into the architecture, and making the space aesthetically pleasing. The sense of space that emerges from the architecture facade is more exploratory; rather than a simple transparent or exposed space, the purpose of it is to find a perfect balance between the hidden or the unfolded, which makes people curious about what the interior is, and generates social interactions between them.
